Pakistan: Honor Killing of Couple Caught on Video Goes Viral

Outrage has erupted in Pakistan after a video showing an "honor killing" of a couple was released. The video, which went viral, depicts the murder of Bano Bibi and Ehsan Ullah Samalani, who were accused of adultery.
The crime reportedly took place in the Balochistan province. In the video, Bano Bibi is seen asking her brother, Jalal Satakzai, to walk seven steps with her before shooting her. Satakzai then shot her and Ehsan Ullah Samalani.
Police have arrested 16 people, including a tribal leader and Bano's mother, Gul Jan Bibi, who stated that the killings were carried out based on tribal traditions. Bano's brother, who is allegedly the perpetrator, has not yet been arrested.
The incident has drawn condemnation from politicians, clerics, and human rights organizations. Despite Pakistan outlawing honor killings in 2016, activists complain that the legislation is not adequately enforced, particularly in areas where tribal councils wield significant influence.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan recorded at least 405 honor killings in 2024, with most victims being women.
