Peru: State of Emergency Declared in Lima and Callao Due to Organized Crime

Peru's interim president, José Herí, has declared a state of emergency in Lima and Callao for 30 days, starting from midnight on Tuesday (local time).

The decision, approved by the cabinet, allows the deployment of the military for patrols and the restriction of constitutional rights, such as the right to assembly. This comes in response to the increase in crime and extortion.

President HerĂ emphasized that the government is changing its strategy and moving "from defense to offense" against crime, aiming to restore peace and security.

Lima was previously placed under a state of emergency from March to July, following the murder of singer Paul Flores. Recent demonstrations against insecurity have led to clashes and injuries.

The public safety crisis is considered a catalyst for the removal of former President Dina Boluarte. Extortion of transport companies is a significant problem, resulting in deadly attacks against drivers.

José Herí will remain in power until July 2026, while general elections are scheduled for April.
