Afghanistan Earthquake: Over 800 Dead, Villages Leveled

At least 800 people have died and over 2,700 were injured after a powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan. According to the Ministry of Health, three villages were leveled in the Kunar province.
Dr. Brian Baptie, a seismologist at the British Geological Survey, points out that the region is located in one of the most seismically active areas on the planet, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. This collision is responsible for many devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan's history.
Afghan authorities warn that the death toll is expected to rise as searches continue in remote mountainous areas near the border with Pakistan.
