Sudan: 11 Dead in Gold Mine Collapse

Eleven workers were killed and seven others injured when part of a gold mine collapsed in northeastern Sudan, the national mining company announced.
The accident occurred at the Kirsh al Fil mine, in the Howeid area, between the cities of Atbara and Haiya. According to the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company (SMRC), tunnels collapsed.
Sudan has been in a civil war since April 2023, with the army of General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan clashing with the Rapid Support Forces of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo. War efforts are funded by gold mining.
Safety measures in Sudanese mines are considered inadequate, and much of the gold is illegally transported to neighboring countries and the UAE.
The war in Sudan has caused the deaths of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of millions.
