Sudan: Paramilitaries Seize El Fasher
Share on:

Sudanese paramilitaries announced they have seized El Fasher, the last major city in Darfur not under their control. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of the city, according to a statement.

The Sudanese army has not commented, while the Popular Resistance Committee denied the city's capture. Fighting continues, with the RSF infiltrating buildings abandoned by the army.

El Fasher has become a key front in the conflict between the army, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitaries of General Mohamed Daglo. The RSF has intensified bombings since August.

If the capture is confirmed, it will strengthen the RSF's position in Darfur. Experts warn of the risk of Sudan's fragmentation. Despite international efforts, the two sides are not responding to calls for negotiations. New peace talks were held in Washington.

Since April 2023, tens of thousands of people have been killed and millions displaced. The UN considers the war in Sudan to have caused "the worst humanitarian crisis" in the world.
