North Korean Family Faces Tragedy After 10 Years of Escape Planning

Two brothers who orchestrated their family's escape from North Korea faced tragedy just months after arriving in South Korea. The family had spent ten years planning the daring escape, a plan initiated by their late father.
On May 6, 2023, Kim Il-hyok and Kim Yi-hyok, along with seven relatives, crossed the Yellow Sea amidst a storm. Among them were young children and Kim Il-hyok's pregnant wife.
After years of preparation and trials, the family managed to cross the Northern Limit Line and seek asylum in South Korea. Four months later, Kim Il-hyok had a daughter. However, their joy was short-lived, as two months after his daughter's first birthday, Kim Yi-hyok died in a diving accident.
Kim Il-hyok continues to build a new life in South Korea, working as a chef and sharing his story. He recently had a second daughter.
