Ivory Coast: Hippopotamus Sinks Boat – 11 Missing

Tragedy in the Ivory Coast: A hippopotamus reportedly sank a boat on the Sassandra River, resulting in 11 people missing, including an infant.
The accident occurred near the community of Buyo. The Minister of Solidarity, Myss Belmonde Dogo, expressed her sadness at the disappearance of the people. Three people were rescued and the search continues.
According to a 2022 study, hippos are the most frequent cause of animal-related deaths and injuries in the Ivory Coast. It is estimated that there are approximately 500 hippos in the country.
Shipwrecks are common in the area due to overloading of boats. In April, 12 children drowned in a similar incident near Abidjan.
