Amsterdam: Historic Vondelkerk Church Tower Collapses After Fire

The tower of the historic Vondelkerk church in Amsterdam collapsed early Thursday morning after a fire broke out shortly after midnight.

Parts of the top of the 154-year-old church had already collapsed after two hours of fire. Surrounding houses were evacuated as the fire ejected ash and pieces of old wood.

The Vondelkerk church was built in 1872 and functioned as a church until 1977. Since then, it has been used for special events. The fire was possibly caused by fireworks.
