New EU Regulation for Media Freedom Implemented

The new European regulation for media freedom comes into effect on Friday across the European Union.
According to the Commission, the regulation offers media companies greater legal certainty and strengthens their independence.
The regulation aims to enhance the freedom, independence, and pluralism of the media within the EU's internal market. It provides stronger protection for journalists, ensures adequate funding and editorial freedom for public media, prevents the unjustified removal of media content from online platforms, and establishes the European Board for Media Services.
Henna Virkkunen stated that the implementation of the regulation is a milestone in promoting a safer media environment in the EU. Journalists will have greater protection, including from spyware and the disclosure of their sources.
Michael McGrath stated that independent media are the backbone of democracies and that with the new regulation, the media and journalists gain unprecedented safeguards.
Most provisions of the regulation come into effect immediately, while some provisions will come into effect on May 8, 2027.
