Greece: Third in the EU for fatal traffic accidents

Greece ranks third in the European Union for fatal traffic accidents, according to data from the European Commission. Every 14 hours, one person loses their life on the road.
In 2024, Greece climbed to 3rd place with the most traffic-related deaths in the EU, behind Romania and Bulgaria. The European average shows a decrease, while Greece is experiencing an increase.
Traffic accident consultant Antonis Morfonios stated that the new Traffic Code does not invest in prevention, but mainly in punishment and collection of fines. The president of the Road Safety Institute "Panos Mylonas", Vasiliki Danelli Mylonas, emphasized the lack of education and impunity as important factors.
