Switzerland Says No to Digital Currency, Yes to Cash

In a referendum, the majority of Swiss citizens supported guaranteeing the availability of cash, ensuring that virtual money will not replace the traditional franc.
73% of citizens voted in favor of ensuring the continued availability of banknotes and coins, safeguarding the protection of cash in the Constitution and ruling out a society exclusively with virtual money.
Any future 'virtual franc,' i.e., a digital currency supported by the Central Bank, must coexist with traditional cash, without replacing it. The initiative concerns concerns about protecting privacy, financial security, and avoiding digital exclusion.
