Over 800,000, possibly up to 1,000,000, young people gathered in the eastern outskirts of Rome for the Vigil of the Jubilee of Youth. Pope Leo XIV, the first American pontiff, arrived by helicopter, sparking enthusiasm and cheers.

The Pope greeted the crowd from the papal vehicle, while the young people had spent the day listening to music, praying, and conversing. The atmosphere was moving when the 69-year-old Pope addressed the youth, calling on them to aim for holiness.

Sunday's mass was the largest mass attendance in the Italian capital in the last 25 years. The Pope referred to a message from the late Pope Francis, emphasizing that everyone is called to face great questions.

The vigil was described as a "Catholic Woodstock" by the Rai television network, with religious music and dance groups entertaining the audience. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni delivered a welcome message.

Pilgrims participated in various events, including confession in Caracalla. The event was marked by the death of an 18-year-old Egyptian pilgrim from cardiac arrest.

Security was tight, with over 4,300 volunteers and 1,000 police officers.
