Investment surge in European defense startups

Investments in European defense technology startups have increased following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. According to PitchBook data, companies in the sector have raised €2.4 billion since the beginning of 2022, including €1.4 billion in the first seven months of 2024 alone.
Europe now has three defense startups with valuations exceeding €1 billion: Helsing, Quantum Systems, and Tekever.
German companies like Helsing have secured significant funding. Swarm Biotactics, which develops controlled cockroaches equipped with micro-backpacks, raised €13 million.
The UK is also attracting investment, with Tekever and Stark establishing production facilities in the country. Wild Hornets, a Ukrainian company, is funded by donations and crowdfunding and collaborates with the Ukrainian armed forces.
Other companies mentioned include Cambridge Aerospace and Arx Robotics.
