European Housing Crisis: High Rents and Price Increases

Eurostat data confirms that the housing crisis is a pan-European phenomenon. From 2015 to the third quarter of 2025, rents increased by 21.1% in the European Union.
According to Theodoros Mitrakos, former deputy governor of the Bank of Greece, in the third quarter of 2025, house prices in the EU increased by 5.5% year-on-year, while rents increased by 3.1%. On a quarterly basis, house prices increased by 1.6% and rents by 0.9%.
From 2015 to the third quarter of 2025, house prices in the EU increased by 63.6%. In Hungary, house prices more than tripled (+275%). Rents increased in all EU countries, with Hungary recording an increase of 107%.
The housing crisis is a European phenomenon exacerbated by a lack of new construction and rising sales prices.
