European Parliament Condemns Violence in Serbia

The European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg discussed the wave of violence in Serbia, with MEPs condemning the violence and supporting the country's European perspective.

Commissioner Marta Kos called for de-escalation of tension and condemned attacks against judges and journalists, stressing that disinformation and hate speech are contrary to EU values.

Davor Ivo Stier stated that Serbia is polarized, while Tonino Picula expressed concern about the government's silencing of the opposition. Anna Maria Vicek condemned the use of force by the police, as well as violence against police officers.

Arkadiusz Mularczyk highlighted the influence of Russia and China in the Balkans, while Helmut Brandstätter proposed awarding the Sakharov Prize to Serbian students. Vladimir Prebilic emphasized the repression of the opposition.

Sebastian Everding spoke of the Serbian President's offensive behavior, while Tomáš Frelich stated that many Serbians do not support joining the EU.

MEP Loukas Fourlas stressed that violence is condemnable from wherever it comes and that Europe is Serbia's partner in this effort.
