Finland: Charges Filed Against Eagle S Tanker Crew for Baltic Sea Sabotage

Finland has filed criminal charges against three crew members of the Eagle S tanker, including the captain, for allegedly sabotaging underwater cables in the Baltic Sea in late 2024.
The crew members are accused of damaging the EstLink 2 underwater power cable and four telecommunications cables connecting Finland and Estonia. They allegedly dragged their anchor deliberately over a distance of 90 kilometers in the Gulf of Finland.
The suspects deny the charges. The cable owners sustained damages of 60 million euros from the restoration.
The damage is considered a serious risk to Finland's energy and telecommunications supply. Experts and political officials classify the incident as part of Moscow's hybrid warfare.
The Eagle S tanker is believed to belong to Russia's 'shadow fleet,' used to circumvent Western sanctions.
