France: General Strike Against Austerity Measures

Hundreds of thousands are expected to protest in France today against Emmanuel Macron's austerity plans, marking a difficult start for new Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu.
Unions have called a general strike, the first since June 6, 2023, in response to the austerity policies promoted by Macron. CGT General Secretary Sophie Binet stated that unions are in a strong position and the Macron government is vulnerable.
A mobilization on September 10 saw 600,000 protesters. The Ministry of Interior expects even greater participation today, possibly up to 900,000 people.
Lecornu, in talks with the opposition, faces anger over Macron's pro-business policies. Unions are demanding the withdrawal of the austerity plan, the abolition of the insurance reform, and increased taxation of the wealthy. Lecornu countered that such measures would harm France's credibility with rating agencies.
La France Insoumise has proposed a motion of no confidence against Lecornu. The Socialists are open to talks but are demanding an end to the cuts and fair contributions from the wealthiest.
