Germany: Crisis in Government Coalition over Judge Nomination

The withdrawal of Frauke Brozius-Gersdorf's candidacy for judge at the Federal Constitutional Court has sparked reactions from the Social Democratic Party (SPD). The head of the SPD parliamentary group, Matthias Miersch, spoke of "shaken confidence" between the government partners, while the chancellery dismissed assumptions of a government crisis.
In a letter to SPD MPs, Miersch stated that they expect greater reliability and commitment from their coalition partners, referring to an "orchestrated campaign" against the candidate. The election of Frauke Brozius-Gersdorf was supposed to be completed in July but was postponed due to reservations from members of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group.
Justice Minister Stephanie Hubig (SPD) warned that "campaigns" should not lead to the loss of talented candidates, while Ralf Stegner stated that the CDU/CSU must understand the dam breach they allowed. The head of the Chancellery, Torsten Frei, stated he is convinced that cooperation can continue successfully.
Ms. Brozius-Gersdorf withdrew her candidacy, revealing that there would be no necessary support from the Christian Union.
