Meta to Halt Political Ads in EU Due to Transparency Law

Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, has announced that it will stop accepting political advertisements on its platforms in the European Union starting in October. This decision is due to the new EU legislation on transparency in political advertising (TTPA).
Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Meta, accuses the EU of imposing "non-functional requirements." The ban will affect advertisements related to political, electoral, and social issues.
The new EU regulation aims to address the manipulation of information and foreign interference in elections, as well as the protection of personal data. Meta was previously at the center of the Cambridge Analytica scandal.
Meta also opposes the EU's code of practice for artificial intelligence, arguing that it introduces legal uncertainties.
Google made a similar decision last year, suspending political advertising before the regulation came into effect.
