Spain: Increases Paid Parental Leave for Both Parents

Spain is increasing paid parental leave for both parents, following Finland's example in the EU. The measure, effective from August 2, 2025, provides an additional week of parental leave and extends paid parental leave to 17 weeks.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the extension of paid leave for childcare by two weeks, bringing the total to 19 weeks, until the child turns eight years old. Additionally, parental care leave is extended by one week to 17 weeks. Single-parent families are entitled to 32 weeks of leave.

Labor Minister Yolanda DĂaz stated that Spain is moving towards feminism and equality. The measure is expected to be approved by parliament, with the Podemos party pushing for even longer leave periods.

Spain and Finland are now the only countries in the EU that offer equal paid parental leave to both parents.
