Wildfires in western Spain have burned an additional 300,000 acres in 24 hours, according to satellite data from the European Copernicus observatory.

Approximately 3,730,000 acres have been burned since the beginning of the year, a number that is constantly increasing, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS).

This year is the worst year for Spain since EFFIS began collecting data in 2006, surpassing the 2022 record of 3,060,000 acres.

The provinces of Zamora, Castile and León, Ourense, and Cáceres have been particularly affected. Thousands of people have been evacuated from their homes, and rail services have been disrupted.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is expected to visit the affected areas. The receding heatwave is expected to improve the situation.
