Strong Winds and Extreme Fire Risk in Greece

Gale-force winds hit Greece on Friday, causing fires and disruptions to ferry services. The strongest gust of wind was recorded in Paximada Karystou, reaching 142 km/h, according to the National Observatory of Athens.

The eight strongest wind gusts recorded on Friday:

  • Paximada Karystou: 142 km/h
  • Penteli Top: 135 km/h
  • Anafi: 101 km/h
  • Penteli: 100 km/h
  • Tinos Porto: 98 km/h
  • Karystos: 90 km/h
  • Paleochora Chania: 87 km/h
  • Plakias Rethymno: 85 km/h

The state mechanism is on alert due to the extreme risk of fire in Attica, Central Greece, Peloponnese and Western Greece. The General Secretariat for Civil Protection warns of an extreme fire risk (risk category 5) in the above areas.

EMY forecasts gale-force north-northeast winds of up to 8 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea. The weather will be generally clear. The temperature will reach 34-36 degrees Celsius, locally 37-38 degrees in the western mainland.
