100 ml Liquid Limit at Airports to be Scrapped?

The European Commission has confirmed that security equipment capable of scanning the contents of large containers of liquids may soon be deployed across the EU. This could lead to the abolition of the 100 ml limit for liquids in hand luggage.
Under current EU regulations, liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) carried in hand luggage must be packaged in containers with a capacity of less than 100ml, with exceptions for special foods, baby products and medicines.
New explosive detection systems for hand luggage have already been installed at some EU airports, such as in Rome and Milan, allowing passengers to safely carry larger containers of liquids. A solution that was successfully tested was approved by ECAC in June 2025.
Once ECAC approval is obtained, the equipment can be deployed for use at airports, which may happen “in the coming days”, according to a Commission representative.
Not all EU airports are equipped with the new explosive detection systems, which are generally more expensive than conventional screening systems.
