EU Considers Sanctions, Anti-Drone Shield in Response to Russian Challenges

Amid concerns about escalating Russian activity, the EU discussed new sanctions, the SAFE program, and anti-drone systems in Copenhagen.
The summit, chaired by AntĂłnio Costa and Mette Frederiksen, focused on strengthening defense and addressing hybrid threats, such as Russian drone overflights.
Ursula von der Leyen presented the “scoping paper” for European defense and announced the launch of the €150 billion SAFE program. Mette Frederiksen emphasized the need for an anti-drone shield.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis called for a European strategy covering the southern borders as well, while Emmanuel Macron warned of Russia's attempts to sow division.
The EU will present a detailed roadmap for “Readiness 2030” at the European Council in October.
