Merz: US Pursues Power Politics, Europe Must Emancipate Itself

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized the United States for pursuing "pure power politics" and called on Europe to emancipate itself and strengthen its economic and political position.
In a speech, Merz referred to US President Donald Trump, noting that Europe should not "bury its head in the sand" or become a "pawn of superpowers." He emphasized the need for Germany to pursue its interests by increasing working hours and maintaining its industrial base.
The Chancellor also addressed the high rates of sick leave in Germany, suggesting a discussion on incentives to stay at work.
Speaking at a party event, Merz stressed that the US is moving away from a rules-based international order, adopting an approach based on power and self-interest.
Finally, Merz expressed confidence that Germany has the potential to overcome challenges, emphasizing that "the solution lies precisely in our own strengths."
