Oxford Considers Latin Phrase Changes for Non-Binary Students

The University of Oxford is considering changing the Latin phrases used in its graduation ceremony, responding to requests from students who identify as non-binary.
The proposal involves replacing the terms magistri (masters) and doctores (doctors) with the neutral term vos (you), in order to include everyone regardless of gender or identity.
Ηλέκτρα Δελαβόγια notes that Latin connects graduates to the European university spirit and that these words are ritualistic carriers of meaning that transcends genders and eras.
She argues that tradition is a root and that changing the language will lead to the loss of a piece of the university's identity.
