219 passengers on a United Airlines flight experienced terror when the pilot issued a distress signal due to a failure in the left engine, shortly after takeoff from Dulles Airport.

According to an audio excerpt, the pilot reported "problem, engine problem, left engine" and declared an emergency ("Mayday, mayday, mayday"). Flight 108, bound for Munich, had taken off on July 25th.

The problem was detected when the aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was at 10,000 feet. The pilot returned to Dulles Airport after circling to dump fuel, as the plane was too heavy for an immediate landing.

The fuel dumping process lasted 30 minutes, and the plane landed safely. An airline official spoke of a "mechanical failure." Source: in.gr
