Paraguay: Senator Sentenced to 13 Years for Drug Trafficking

A senator in Paraguay has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for drug trafficking, according to a court decision issued on Monday.

Erico Galeano, a member of the ruling Colorado Party, was found guilty of money laundering and criminal association. The conviction was upheld by an appeals court.

Investigations linked Galeano to Sebastián Marset, a Uruguayan considered a leading figure in an international cocaine trafficking ring. Galeano was accused of using the Deportivo Capiata football club, of which he was president, for money laundering.

Additionally, he faced charges of using a private plane for drug trafficking. The case has caused a stir in Paraguay, as other politicians have been accused in the past of having links to drug traffickers.
