UK Under-Secretary Resigns Over Rent Increase Controversy

Rushanara Ali has resigned from her position as Under-Secretary for Homelessness in the UK, following controversy over a £700 rent increase on a property she owns.

The resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer. The case came to light through The i Paper newspaper, which reported that four tenants received notice of non-renewal of their lease, and after their departure, the property was re-listed with an increased rent.

The incident sparked reactions from charities and the opposition. Kevin Hollinrake, chairman of the Conservative Party, accused Ali of hypocrisy. Ali defended her actions, stating that she had complied with all legal obligations.

In her resignation letter, Ali stated that her remaining in the position would be a distraction to the government's work.
