European Strategy for Migration Presented

In Brussels, the Commission presented the first comprehensive European strategy for the management of migration and asylum, charting the course of EU policy for the next five years.
Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner stated that the priority is to reduce illegal arrivals and keep them at low levels. He pointed out that abuse of the asylum system undermines public trust and the ability to protect citizens.
The strategy is a continuation of the Pact on Migration and Asylum. A central pillar is increasing the returns of migrants who are not entitled to asylum. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the Union's external borders, with the implementation of border procedures, the development of digital entry/exit systems, and the upgrading of Frontex's role.
