Peru: Three Dead, Seven Missing in Attack on Coal Miners

At least three people have been killed and seven are missing following an attack on New Year's Eve against coal miners working in informal mines in northern Peru, a local mayor said today.

The attack occurred in a town in the northern region of La Libertad, said the mayor of Pataz, Aldo Marino, on local television. Police reported 13 deaths in the same area in May 2025.

"According to information I received from the police, three people were killed at a mine entrance and seven are missing," Marino told Canal N, adding that reports from other people in the area indicate the death toll may be higher.

Police have not confirmed the attack, and government officials were not available for comment.
