Portugal: Potential Social Media Ban for Children
Share on:

Portugal is on the verge of banning social media for children, with a relevant law submitted to parliament.

According to the proposed law, teenagers aged 13 to 16 will not be able to access social media without parental consent. Platforms will be required to implement an age and parental consent verification system compatible with Portuguese administration software.

Portugal is following the example of countries such as Australia and France, while other EU countries, such as Denmark, Greece, and Spain, also support a pan-European ban.

Supporters of the law argue that early use of social media can undermine children's social and cognitive development.
