Prada Faces Backlash in India Over Kolhapuri Sandals

Prada has sparked controversy in India with its new line of sandals, which closely resemble traditional Kolhapuri sandals. The sandals were presented at Milan Fashion Week and were described simply as 'leather footwear,' without any mention of their Indian origin.

Following the backlash, Prada acknowledged that the sandals are inspired by Indian footwear and stated that it is in contact with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture. Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada's Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, stated that the company is open to dialogue with Indian artisans.

Kolhapuri sandals have been protected by Geographical Indication (GI) status in India since 2019. Artisans have expressed disappointment over the use of the design without recognition, as they cost only a few rupees in India, while Prada is expected to sell them at a high price.
