Sheikh Gathers Thousands of Islamists in Izmir, Opposition Reacts

A gathering of thousands of individuals identifying as radical Islamists in Izmir, following a call by a sheikh of a religious sect, has sparked strong reactions. The incident has drawn criticism as Izmir is considered a symbol of "European" Turkey.

The gathering, which lasted for several hours, included slogans with strong religious and Islamist content, according to SKAI. The Turkish opposition voiced strong criticism, denouncing that while other gatherings are not allowed, such mass religious events take place without problems.

Opposition members questioned how such a gathering could take place without police intervention, in contrast to their own mobilizations, where they denounce excessive police repression.

The government responded that claims regarding possible relations between the head of the gendarmerie and the specific religious group will be examined.
