Sicily: Bridge Collapses While Vehicles Were Crossing

The San Giuliano bridge near Raddazzo in Catania, Sicily, collapsed, cutting off access to several municipalities in the province of Messina. Dramatic footage captured sections of the bridge detaching as vehicles were crossing.
Thanks to the timely reaction of drivers, the worst was avoided and there were no injuries. Traffic was stopped and restoration work has begun.
The collapse is causing difficulties in accessing health services, education and transport for residents of Raddazzo, which has a population of over 8,000.
The bridge had been deemed problematic, and heavy rainfall worsened the situation.
