A United Airlines flight from Washington to Munich experienced a tense situation when the pilot of a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner issued a distress call shortly after takeoff.

According to audio recordings, the pilot reported "engine problem, engine problem on the left engine" and declared an emergency with "Mayday, mayday, mayday."

Flight 108, which departed from Dulles Airport at 6 p.m. on July 25, encountered the issue at 10,000 feet.

Air traffic controllers directed the pilot to return to the airport. Due to the aircraft's weight, the pilot had to circle to dump fuel, a process that took 30 minutes.

An airline official cited a "mechanical failure" without providing further details.
