Munich International Airport announced that it was forced to suspend operations due to unmanned aerial vehicles spotted in the area on Thursday night, resulting in the cancellation of 17 flights and the disruption of nearly 3,000 passengers.

Another 15 flights destined for Munich were diverted to the airports of Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, and Vienna, according to reports.

It all started around 21:30 (local time, 22:30 in Cyprus) when eyewitnesses reported drones flying over the airport area. As authorities investigated, the mysterious drones were spotted again about an hour later.

As a result, the airport administration decided to suspend operations around 22:30 (local time, 23:30) and no aircraft were allowed to take off or land.

Currently, German authorities are unable to guarantee the smooth operation of the international airport after 5 a.m. on Friday.
