Turkey: Prosecution of Opposition Party Officials

In Turkey, the prosecutor's office has prepared an indictment against 10 officials of the Republican People's Party, the main opposition party, which provides for prison sentences of one to three years.
Among the accused are the Chairman of the party organization in Istanbul, Ozgur Celik, the Mayor of Pera, Inan Guney, and the Mayor of Besiktas, Riza Akpolat.
The charge concerns electoral fraud during the Istanbul internal party congress in October 2023. The judicial investigation began on March 4, 2024.
This prosecution adds to a series of legal cases faced by leading members of the Republican People's Party.
