Turkey: Arrests at Istanbul Pride Parade Amidst Bans

Turkish police arrested at least 30 people in Istanbul on Sunday as they attempted to participate in a Pride Parade, which had been banned by authorities. Kezban Konukçu, a member of parliament from the pro-Kurdish DEM party, stated that at least 30 people were detained.
Videos show police clashing with activists holding rainbow flags. The Istanbul governor's office called the parade illegal. Authorities have banned Pride Parades in Istanbul since 2015.
President Tayyip Erdogan's Justice and Development Party (AKP) has adopted a harsh rhetoric against the LGBTQ+ community. Erdogan has declared 2025 as the 'Year of the Family' and has accused the LGBTQ+ movement of undermining traditional values.
Human rights organizations, such as Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, have condemned Turkey's stance, warning of increased discrimination and violence.
