Tragic Death of 33-Year-Old Climber from Patras in the Alps

A 33-year-old climber, Dimitris Kantas from Patras, Greece, lost his life in the Alps, on Mont Blanc, on Monday.
According to pelop.gr, Dimitris Kantas was known in the local community as a basketball player and passionate alpinist.
French media report that the 33-year-old lost his balance during the descent and fell into the void, below the Goûter refuge, at an altitude of 3,835 meters.
His body has been repatriated to Greece, while the French authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident.
The Chamonix Mountain Gendarmerie (PGHM) confirmed that the man, of Greek nationality, was found dead after falling in the upper part of the Goûter corridor, also known as the 'corridor of death'.
Authorities stated that the climber was descending alone and without a rope, carrying a heavy backpack.
The accident was probably caused by a combination of fatigue, loss of concentration, and the weight of the equipment.
The Goûter corridor is notorious for rockfalls, and more than 100 people have lost their lives at this spot.
