Avalanche in French Alps Claims Three Skiers' Lives

Three skiers died today after being swept away by an avalanche in an off-piste area in Val-d'Isère, in the French Alps. The area is located in Savoie, where the avalanche risk remains very high.
The avalanche swept away six skiers, four of whom were accompanied by a professional guide. "Despite the rapid intervention of the rescue services, three people died," the ski resort administration said, adding that all skiers were equipped with avalanche transceivers. An investigation into the incident has been launched.
The risk of avalanches in the area is very high (4 on a scale of 1-5). The resort urged skiers to stay in safe areas. Storm Nils caused heavy snowfall in France, bringing up to 100 centimeters of fresh snow to Mont Blanc, according to Météo-France.
The service had issued a red alert for avalanche in Savoie. Many ski resorts in the French Alps decided to close completely or partially.
