Viktor Orban: The End of a European 'Godfather'?
Share on:

The election result in Hungary signals the collapse of a political model and a system aimed at undermining the European Union, according to Panos Loukakos.

Orban was a leading figure of Eurosceptic far-right in the European Parliament, with ties to the Trump and Putin regimes. His defeat represents a victory for European liberal democracy against authoritarian forces.

Orban is considered a model for Donald Trump, as he deconstructed institutions, brought justice and the media under control, and created an extensive network of corruption.

In Orban's Hungary, Trump's America and Putin's Russia converged. Trump sent J.D. Vance to support Orban, while Putin helped him with various means of influence.

Orban provided valuable services to Moscow, hindering sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine. For Trump, he was the main supporter of his policies in Europe.

Orban's defeat represents a defeat for Trumpism and Putinism in Europe, although there are other leaders who follow similar policies, such as Robert Fico and Andrej Babiš.
