Bulgaria and North Macedonia have signed an agreement for the construction of a railway tunnel that has been delayed for 100 years. The agreement was signed at the Gyueshevo railway station.

The cross-border tunnel, approximately 2.4 kilometers long, is a key project of the "Western Balkans - Eastern Mediterranean" Corridor and Corridor 8. It will contribute to the economic development and the European and NATO interconnection of the region.

Bulgarian Minister of Transport Grozdan Karadjov noted that the cross-border connection has been delayed for 100 years. The two countries do not yet have a railway connection, as North Macedonia still needs to construct approximately 65 km of railway line.

The agreement was welcomed by the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, who stressed that it promotes good neighborly relations and strengthens regional prosperity and common security.
