Former Porto and Brazil national team goalkeeper, Helton Arruda, has been arrested in Portugal for illegal firearm possession and domestic violence.

Helton Arruda, a member of the Seleção that won the Copa America in 2007, faces serious charges after a complaint of domestic violence was filed by a woman with whom he allegedly had an extramarital affair. During a search of his home, police found ammunition and an illegal firearm.

The 47-year-old, who played for 11 years at Porto and won 18 titles, stated that the gun belonged to a deceased friend. However, police investigation revealed that the gun had been stolen from a town near his home. If convicted, Helton faces a prison sentence of up to three years.

In addition to his career at Porto, Helton has also excelled with Vasco, winning the Copa Libertadores in 1997, as well as with the Brazilian national team.
