British police have confirmed that Christian Brückner remains a suspect in the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, despite his impending release from prison in Germany.

The 49-year-old German, already convicted of child abuse and drug trafficking, is imprisoned for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in the Algarve. German authorities stated in 2020 that McCann was likely dead and Brückner responsible, but he denies any involvement.

Prior to his release, Portuguese and German authorities conducted searches in June for evidence linking him to the case. The head of the British police investigation, Commander Mark Cranwell, confirmed that Brückner remains a suspect.

Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007, from the apartment where she was with her family in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Investigations are ongoing.
