US Targets 'Dark Fleet' of Tankers

The United States is escalating efforts to combat the 'dark fleet' of tankers, seizing the Olina tanker, the fifth vessel seized in three weeks. The Olina, under US sanctions, stopped transmitting data in November and loaded crude oil from Venezuela in late December.

Washington seeks to dismantle this network of ships evading regulations by changing names and disabling tracking systems. Approximately 50 ships are in limbo due to sanctions and China's demand for cheap oil.

Meanwhile, questions remain about the future of Venezuela's oil industry. The interim government agreed to hand over millions of barrels of crude oil to the US, while the US will supply diluent naphtha to Venezuela. US companies may be encouraged to invest if political stability is achieved.

In the short term, it is expected that more barrels from Venezuela will be redirected to the US and Europe. Independent Chinese companies may turn to Iranian or Russian oil. The risk of seizing ships under US sanctions has increased.

The situation in the Caribbean adds geopolitical risk and increased freight rate volatility, with oil flows increasingly determined by political decisions.
