Today marks 80 years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The bombing by the United States caused the death of 140,000 people and hastened the end of World War II.

A minute of silence was observed today in Hiroshima during an annual ceremony, with the participation of representatives from over a hundred countries.

The mayor of Hiroshima, in his speech, pointed out that the United States and Russia possess 90 percent of the nuclear warheads.

He added that unfortunately, some leaders accept the idea that nuclear weapons are necessary for their national defense, blatantly disregarding the lessons that the international community should have learned from the tragedies of History.
