Argentina's libertarian president, Javier Milei, hailed his party's victory in the midterm elections, with over 40% of the vote, as a "turning point."

With 97% of the votes counted, the La Libertad Avanza party secured 40.7% compared to 31.6% for the Peronist opposition.

Milei stated that these elections are "the confirmation of the mandate we received in 2023" and pledged to continue on the "path of reforms."

Milei's party is expected to increase its deputies from 37 to 101 (out of a total of 257) and its senators from six to 20 (out of a total of 72).

Donald Trump has reportedly secured his support for President Milei, while threatening to back down in the event of an electoral blow to his counterpart.
