CPJ: Journalists 'Must Never Be Targeted in Wartime'

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has condemned the targeting of journalists in war zones, following the death of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif and four of his colleagues in an Israeli strike.
Jodie Ginsberg, CPJ's director, stated that targeting journalists is a war crime, as they are considered civilians. Al Jazeera reported that Anas al-Sharif was killed in a targeted strike near Shifa Hospital.
The Israeli armed forces confirmed that they targeted al-Sharif, calling him a 'terrorist' who was 'posing as a journalist.' The CPJ had previously denounced Israel's practice of labeling journalists as fighters without providing evidence.
Ginsberg emphasized that, according to international law, only active combatants are legitimate targets in a war situation. She demanded that the Israeli military prove that Anas al-Sharif was an active fighter in order to justify his killing.
