Amnesty International: Evin Prison Attack Was a War Crime

Amnesty International is calling for an investigation into a possible "war crime" following Israeli airstrikes on Evin Prison in Tehran. The organization emphasizes that the airstrikes constitute a serious violation of international law.

According to Amnesty International's statement, Israeli forces carried out multiple strikes on the prison, causing deaths, injuries, and extensive damage. The report is based on verified videos, satellite photos, and testimonies.

Amnesty International stresses that a prison is considered a civilian infrastructure and there is no evidence to suggest that Evin Prison was a legitimate military target. Israel launched airstrikes on Iran on June 13, with the aim, according to the Israeli government, of preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

On June 23, a bombing at Evin Prison claimed the lives of at least 79 people. It is estimated that 1,500 to 2,000 people were held in the prison during the attack. Evin Prison often holds dissidents, foreigners, and individuals with dual citizenship.

Among the detainees were a French couple, Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who have been detained in Iran since May 2022. They have been transferred to another prison and face charges that carry the death penalty.

European governments describe their citizens arrested in Iran as "state hostages."
